Sell not Tell: This might sound a pretty obvious thing to state, but sessions often contain activities that do not relate to the players’ or the team’s needs. To avoid this focus development by asking questions! Start with a game in the warm-up, and build on it in the main theme of the session; opportunities are then created for you to ask questions that enable players to identify themselves those elements they need to focus on and practice to be successful. For example: In the last phase of play we created a good scoring opportunity – how could we develop the play to be more successful next time? The opposition are scoring more than we are; in what ways can we start to restrict their opportunities? Players now have to communicate, work together and practice, either inside or outside the game, those ‘game-related’ elements to have success. Sell it!!
