Be a better Coach – READ!
Over the years of my coaching and coach development career I have been introduced to many sources of information by colleagues, players and fellow coaches. All, in their different ways have been invaluable, not only for my own development, but most significantly for the knowledge essential for creating positive teaching, coaching and learning environments for those I have been engaged with.
My tip for coaches therefore is to R.E.A.D! Think outside the box and Research anywhere you can – do not discard information just because you don’t agree with it – everything has value. Engage with anyone who can add value to your coaching – everyone has a contribution to make. Be Accepting and open to new or different ideas or points of view – Einstein’s definition of insanity is to continue to do the same things over and over and expect to get a different result; be prepared to change. And Discuss regularly with fellow coaches, players, colleagues or anyone keen to share ideas and views with you – in the words of American academic Paul Wellstone, ‘If a teacher does not involve himself, his values, his commitments, in the course of discussion, why should the students?’.
