Learning through Games Football provides a ‘games based’ approach to teaching and coaching young children football skills and uses practices that develop an understanding and awareness of the skills, tactics, strategies and rules required to succeed in games. The game is the focus, challenging children to think about what they are doing and why, and providing enjoyment in their learning of skills. Promoted by the Football Association, it is the essential resource for every teacher and coach of young children.
The content is based on 10 fun football games (demonstrated and explained visually through video) that progress from a simple dribbling game through to those which are more complex and involve creating and using space.
Each game also features Tacklesport’s original 2D animation. This enables the user to understand how the game should ideally work and what the set-up should look like. A detailed written explanation is included for the organisation and description of the game. Ways of how to adapt it to suit individual needs are also provided.
Aligned to each game are a number of animated Make a Difference activities. These allow the user to maintain the ‘fun’ element of teaching and coaching game related skills whilst maintaining the ‘Game’ as the key focus.
Key skills for each game are also identified. These may be accessed and viewed in both video and animated formats. By combining related games and skills the teacher or coach may easily plan a session around a theme or develop a specific aspect of the game. These key skills may also be accessed in isolation, providing quick access to the key focus points to put across during the related practices. As with all the videos of the resource, the Key Skills may be viewed in slow motion for detailed observation of key points of technique.
This software uses practices that progressively challenge and motivate pupils to develop an understanding and awareness of the skills, tactics, strategies, and rules required to succeed in games. In essence, it makes the game the focus of the lesson rather than the technique, and challenges pupils to think about what they are doing and why.

As the first specialist producer of sports teaching and coaching multimedia in the UK, Tacklesport (Consultancy) Ltd has consistently sought to be innovative whilst at the same time developing resources which are informative, relevant and user friendly. In developing Learning through Games- Football, care has been taken to ensure these qualities have been maintained. In addition an emphasis has been placed on a 'fun' and enjoyment' approach to learning. Developed with educational consultants and produced with the help of a local primary school, it is hoped that the content of the resource will assist in the development of football at key stages 1 & 2.
Learning through Games is an approach to teaching that uses games as the learning tool. It aims to provide enjoyment, increase motivation and develop tactical and strategic thinking - as well as the development of technique and the acquisition of skill.
Often one of the first questions asked at the start of a games lesson is “When are we going to play a game?” Children have a natural inclination for ‘play’; too often in the past they have been subjected to a ‘practice first – play later’ diet of skills based learning.
While the time invested in ‘skill/drill’ based learning may pay-off when games are eventually played, there has often been one key element missing from the skills, drills, game cycle - fun!
